In order to implement the Schengen Agreement of 1985 and the provisions of the Convention on implementation of Schengen Agreement of 1990, Lithuania as of November 15, 2003, established three positions of police attaché of the Republic of Lithuania at the diplomatic representations of the Republic of Lithuania in the Republic of Poland, the Kingdom of Spain, the Kingdom of the Netherlands and Europol. Later, with respect to the objective criteria and needs, position of police attaché in the Republic of Poland was revoked but there were posted other two additional positions - one to Europol (in 2005) and the other one to the Republic of Ireland (in 2007). Currently Lithuanian Police has 2 police attaché positions (1 at The Kingdom of the Netherlands and Europol and 1 at the Permanent Representation of Lithuania to the EU).
The task of a police liaison officer of the Republic of Lithuania is continuous collecting and exchange of information concerning actual cases, strengthening of ties among competent institutions, providing of consultations and help to the officers of a state recipient. The liaison officer of the Republic of Lithuania facilitates and accelerates gathering and exchange of information, while maintaining ties with law enforcement institutions and other competent institutions of a state recipient. Police liaison officers themselves promote information collection and exchange, especially if the information is of strategic nature and can be utilized in combat improvement against criminality. Such information also encompasses more comprehensively prepared data on legal documents available in a certain state as well as possible methods of activity.
