To Defend. To Protect. To Help.

First founded in 1918, the Lithuanian Police grew quickly over the coming decades. Last year, in 2011, it commemorated its 93th anniversary. While a man would consider this lifetime, for an institution  it is just the beginning. The Lithuanian Police are proud of their honest, educated, qualified and dedicated officers.

The Lithuanian Police is comprised of:
- Police department under the Ministry of the Interior;
- Local police branches;
- Special police institutions;
- Educational police institutions.

The Police Department functions as an organization helping the Police Commissioner General to create a strategy of activities as well control its implementation. The Police Department is also responsible for managing local police branches.

Local police branches are defined as police offices located in the community that are responsible for executing certain functions defined by the law.

Special police offices are those police branches founded according to a non-territorial principle. They execute functions defined by the law for this type of police department.

Educational police institutions are police training institutions established by the Police Commissioner General to ensure the continous training and professional, in-service development of police officers.
